The Gold Card
If you want to call yourself a qualified electrician, you will need to hold what is called an ECS Gold card

How to get an ECS Gold Card
You will need to pass your AM2 assessment to get your gold card. This is an exam held over 2.5 days.
You can only take the AM2 after completing 1 of the following pathways
Route 1
Experienced
Worker
Provide a Portfolio of Work
Route 2
Self
Funded
12 Weeks
Level 2 + 3 Diploma course
Then Provide a Portfolio
Route 3
Apprentice
Route
Find an employer to pay for your course
3-4 years on the job training
Route 1 - The Experienced Worker Route
Designed to help people who are experienced electricians get their gold card without having to go through a lengthy learning process away from work.
We will ask you to complete an initial assessment before you start.
You will then speak to an assessor who will make arrangements for them to assess your work while you continue with your day to day work life.

Proof of 3 years working experience (5 years for commercial

Route 2 - The Self Funded Route
This is definitely the quickest option if you are just starting out
First you will need to complete your Level 2 diploma in electrical installation. This typically takes 8 weeks full time. There are options for evenings + weekends. That will take a bit longer.
At this point people can switch onto an apprentice program (companies are more likely to take you on if you have shown dedication to complete Level 2

On completion you will move on to the level 3 Diploma which is 4 weeks.

Once this is complete you should find work as a Junior electrician and begin providing your portfolio of work.
Once this is complete you can sit your AM2 Exam

Route 3 - The Apprentice Route
Apprenticeships are a great option for some people.
You will need to find an employer who is willing to pay for your course whilst they employ you
You will have a mixture of on the job practical training and class room based training
Your portfolio will be created whilst you are working at the company
Apprenticeships typically last around 4 years before you can take your exam.
